Golden Paintworks - Soapstone
A unique, acrylic texture that contains no Titanium Dioxide and can achieve very deep colors when tinted with any pre-tinted flat acrylic paint. When trowel applied, it exhibits a subtle movement of color across the surface with little to no sheen and creates dimensional ornament without cracking. Once dry, the surface allows ample hold-out for applying Glazes and Mediums to embellish the decorative finish.
We Color Match popular paint swatches! Note: A color sample of the plaster is made on card stock and left to air dry. The dried color sample, without burnishing or waxing, is what we match to the selected color swatch. The final finish will have deeper tones and darker shades of your color. All of our custom colors are tinted by eye and as such some minor color variance is to be expected. All custom mixes add one to four business days to our processing time.

Surface Preparation
Remove all surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Existing peeled or checked paint should be scraped and sanded to a smooth, sound surface (See warning below). Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull. Stains from water, smoke, ink, pencil, grease, etc. should be sealed with the appropriate primer/sealer. If existing paint is in good condition, priming is not needed. If a surface is new, priming and painting with an eggshell or satin finish wall paint will provide the best, uniform surface for applying Soapstone Texture.
WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) andproper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at –LEAD (in US) or contact your local health authority.
Drywall: Fill cracks and holes with patching paste/spackle and sand smooth. Joint compounds must be cured and sanded smooth. Remove all sanding dust.
Masonry, Concrete, Cement, Block: All new surfaces must be cured according to the supplier’s recommendations—usually about 30 days. Remove all form release and curing agents. Rough surfaces can be filled to provide a smooth surface. If painting cannot wait 30 days, allow the surface to cure 7 days and prime the surface with a quality concrete and masonry primer.
Application:
- Stir contents before use.
- Trowel, brush, roller or spray apply.
- Apply at temperatures between 50° F & 90° F.
- May be thinned with water, up to 30% by volume.
- May be tinted with waterborne or Universal colorants (UTC), up to 10% by volume.
- Apply only to clean, dry, painted or primed surfaces.
- Allow a minimum of 1 to 4 hours drying time between coats.
- Test your technique on a practice board before applying to walls.
- For indoor use.
Trowel Application: Wipe trowel edges periodically to clean and prevent build-up of dried material. Installed finishes exhibit variations in lightness/darkness. Note: material will “metal mark” when dry.
Brush application: Thin Soapstone Texture with water to increase brushability.
Roller Application: A ½” nap roller cover may be used for the first coat. Roller cover thickness will determine the amount of material that is applied to the work surface for subsequent tooling and will influence the appearance of the final finish. Increasing the nap thickness will result in heavier applications which may crack upon drying. Use a texture roller cover for a coarse effect or to transfer to the work surface for subsequent tooling.
Spray Application: Spraying allows for a consistent, uniform amount of product to be applied rapidly for a quick follow up knock down. When spraying, wear eye protection and particulate respirator, and prevent others from coming into contact with spray mist.
Tools:
Trowel: Use a flexible, stainless steel or plastic trowel designed to apply decorative plasters.
Brush: No specific requirements for the type of brush.
Roller: 9/16" microfiber roller.
Spray equipment options:
- Hopper Sprayer:
- Marshalltown SharpShooter® or equivalent
- #1 tip (3/16” / 5 mm orifice); 40 PSI
- No reduction required, but may be reduced up to 30% to adjust application properties.
- Pump/compressed air sprayers with reservoir:
- Best Recommendation: Graco® TexSpray RTX 1500 or equivalent
- “White” tip; ”high” air volume setting • Reduce 10% - 15% with water when using line feed from stationary hopper.
Coverage: Highly dependent on application technique and number of layers. Approx. 50-150 sq.ft./gal..
Dry Time: @ 50% RH, 77° F: Touch 1 hour. Recoat 4 hours. Cold weather & high humidity will slow down cure time.
WARNING! Causes eye irritation. Wash thoroughly after handling. IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention. Inhalation of concentrated vapors (contains aqueous ammonia) can cause headache, nausea and irritation of the nose, throat and lungs. Provide adequate ventilation.
Clean Up: Clean your skin and equipment immediately after use with soap and warm water. Consult with local authorities for methods of disposal.
Storage: Store in a cool/dry location @ temperatures between 40° F & 90° F. Do not allow material to freeze or be exposed to temperatures exceeding 120° F for extended periods.
