Modern Masters was the first USA manufacturer of acrylic Venetian Plaster, which has been used by professional applicators and do-it-yourselfers on thousands of projects across North America. Venetian Plaster is a finishing technique using thin layers of plaster applied with a spatula or trowel and then burnished to create a smooth surface with the illusion of depth and texture. You can control the sheen level of the finish by simply sanding and burnishing until the desired sheen is obtained. The more you burnish, the more translucent the finish becomes, re-creating the translucency found in real marble. The finish becomes so smooth it even feels like real marble. By varying the color, application technique and the amount of burnishing, other finishes can be created including stone, worn leather and suede.

Venetian Plaster Tint Base (VP100) is short filled to allow for tint. Off white or pastel colors can be achieved. To determine the proper amount of tint color to be used, refer to the color formula for a typical pastel paint base. Do not exceed 8 fl. oz. of tint per gallon (236 ml/3.78 L).

Venetian Plaster Ultra-Deep Tint Base (VP200) is short filled to allow for tint. Dark and ultra-deep colors can be achieved. To determine the proper amount of tint color to be used, refer to the color formula for a typical ultra-deep paint base. Do not exceed 8 fl. oz. of tint per gallon (236 ml/3.78 L).

Dry Times – Dry time is approximately 2-4 hours. Dry time depends on thickness of application, temperature and humidity. (Drying times were recorded at 70°F and 50%RH): Note: Lower temperature and/or higher humidity will lengthen the dry and cure times.

Protection – After being polished, the Venetian Plaster should be treated with care. It is not scrubbable or water resistant, but it is easily repaired. To provide extra protection in bathrooms or high traffic areas, apply Modern Masters Venetian Plaster Clear Topcoat (VP300).Other protective topcoats cannot be used to protect the Venetian Plaster.

Coverage – One gallon/3.78 liters will cover approximately 150 to 200 square feet/13.5 to 18 square meters.

Clean Up – Clean tools with soap and warm water immediately after use. Do not reuse containers and properly dispose of empty containers.

Surface Preparation – The surface should be free of imperfections, sealed with a primer-sealer and have a low sheen. If it is not, fill cracks and nail holes, then seal with a primer-sealer. We recommend Zinsser’s Bullseye® WATER-BASE. (Hint: Tint the primer-sealer to a color similar to the color chosen for the Venetian Plaster).

Basic Tone on Tone Application –

Step 1 – Skim Coat: Apply a skim coat of Venetian Plaster with a Japanese Trowel or Blade at a low trowel angle (2 finger space) and scrape off excess at a high trowel angle (3 to 4 finger space). Let dry 1 hour.

Step 2 – Texture Coat: Apply a texture coat of Venetian Plaster with a low trowel angle and light pressure using a skip trowel technique. This technique will produce peaks that should be “knocked down” by smoothing lightly with a low trowel angle. Let dry for 1-2 hours.

Step 3 – Skim Coat: Repeat the process done in step one and let dry for 1 hour.

For suede and stone looks, burnishing/polishing is not needed.

Burnish/Polish: For a marble-like finish, sand the dry Venetian Plaster in a circular motion with 400 grit dry sandpaper (a palm sander can be used). For a higher sheen, dust off with a soft rag and sand with 600 grit dry sandpaper. Dust off with a damp soft rag.

To get a very high sheen, after sanding, burnish the surface by rubbing vigorously with your trowel or the flat side of a clean putty knife. This is not recommended for light colors.

Taping – Use high quality, low-tack tape when taping over surfaces that have been previously painted.
